Determining Running Gait with a Smart Phone App

Many people suffer from pronation or supination while walking or running. Pronation is when the outer edge of the heel strikes the ground and the foot rolls inward and flattens out. Pronation is a natural part of how feet function, but overpronation can cause injuries. Supination is when the foot rolls outwards instead of inwards. If the supination is excessive it can damage the ankle. There are many ways to determine whether you suffer from over- or underpronation (supination), but would it be possible to let an app diagnose your movement by filming when you walk and/or run? Zero-downtime Deployments

For low- to medium-use applications, it is often good enough to upgrade to new versions by shutting down and starting the new version. This is commonly done during night-time to avoid disrupting users. But, to be able to easily deploy several times a day while maintaining high availability and low latency around the clock – such as for an IoT service where sensor values are streaming in traffic 24/7 – the deploy process cannot result in several seconds or minutes of downtime. IT Services - YourCloud Computing

Traditionally is the development of IT systems funded by the business that is supposed to use it. The development is an investment that is recognized as capital expenses. The investment is motivated with a number of possible effects that will give the return on the investment. These effects may be overestimated to get priority. Having different business units funding their own IT systems may lead narrow scope of the developed functions. Once invested in development and deployment of components, there are no motives to decommission them even if they are not used. Because in case they are needed again it will be new investments and capital expenses. In this situation may operational expenses be wasted on overlapping functionality, unused features, etc. Read more

Distributed Locking Mechanisms

Many traditional computer systems are often built as monoliths running in a single execution environment. This permits the design and implementation of such systems to make use of the possibility to share memory between process and threads between on the hosting machine. This makes the implementation of synchronization and locking of processes and resources a simple task when required. Many such systems that has grown over the years start facing new requirements of both scalability and redundancy. In such situations challenges are often encountered when the implementation is dependent on the availability of shared memory for locking purposes. The subject of this thesis is to analyze in which situations new implementation must be done and how issues. The student should propose ideas and solutions to locking problems in distributed environments. Both in terms of adaptation of implementation, introduction of new software components as well as changes to the solution architecture. Additionally, performance impact both in computing resources and response times should be evaluated. Read more
